It is devastating to see your precious books get drenched in water. To avoid any possible long-term water damage, it is best to attend to the situation immediately. Your books can still be saved from water damage if you act quickly and wisely.

1. Protect yourself.

If the book was submerged in flood waters, you have to wear protective gears to avoid skin contamination of the germs and bacteria that may have been transferred to the books by the water. Wear a shirt that you are not afraid to stain and gloves that are long enough to amply cover your hands and arms. If the flood waters are murky and you think they may have come from the sewage systems, you can also wear a face mask so that you will not inhale any irritants and aerial bacteria.

2. Absorb the water off the books.

You can absorb the excess water by using a paper napkin, a cloth towel or a sponge. Gently dab the absorbent material on the pages of the book to absorb as much water as you can. You can also use absorbent paper to remove the dampness. Just place the paper in between the wet pages and close the book to allow absorption to take place. If the water is very dirty and the book is stained, you can rinse the pages very gently with cold water. If the pages are too wet and fragile, you can use a water sprayer to wash them.

3. Allow the pages to dry.

Lay the book on a location with a flat surface and sufficient exposure to sunlight. Allow it to stand on the top or bottom edges. You can leave the book to dry while you take care of other matters related to the water damage. You can also use an industrial fan to speed up the drying process.

4. Freeze books that cannot be attended to immediately.

If you do not have the time to supervise the drying of the book, you can put the books inside a plastic, zip-lock bag after washing it. You can then put the covered book in the freezer. Freezing will arrest the spread of water damage and will restore the pages of the book to their original state. It will also avoid the blotting of the prints in the books.

5. Check the book for any sign of mold growth.

You have to spot check the book for possible signs of mold growth. Mold reproduction is a common effect of water damage. Because of the remaining moisture in the pages, the molds easily settle and damage the book. When this happens, you have to seek professional mold treatment in order to save the book from water damage.

Immediate water damage restoration should be done right after the flood subsides. Doing it yourself can really be a tiring job, especially if you don’t have the necessary tools and knowledge. Hiring a water damage restoration company will be a wise decision if you can spend some money to restore your properties. The sad part about this is that some households have experienced water damage before and had done nothing but cleanup. Then, when another hard rain comes, they are out cleaning again. The need for water damage restoration can be lessened if we will be a little more careful and if we lay some corrective measures so water damage will not take place. If you’re leaving in an area that is frequently flooding, installing a sump pump can be useful to avoid damage inside your home and save on water damage restoration.

However, aside from natural flooding, these damages can be caused by various incidents inside your home. Most of the times we can notice some symptoms but we usually neglect them because they were just too small and they don’t look threatening enough. Moisture on exterior walls and grid-like dirt marks on ceilings & walls can be due to not enough insulation. This can be corrected by putting insulation. Wet foundation walls and wallpaper peeling in bathroom or kitchen can be due to high humidity level inside your basement. This can be corrected by installing or using a dehumidifier. We often see white powder present on foundation wall. This can be due to lime or salt deposit, called efflorescence. These deposits can easily be brushed away. Then apply damp-proofing compound to the inside face of the foundation. Leakage under your window may mean that the window doesn’t fit exactly to its frame and needed an immediate repair. Water stain on the ceiling and inside wood trim or flooring rotting indicates that there’s a leakage on your roof that needs to be corrected.

These are small things if you look at it but let’s keep in mind that small things lead to bigger ones and sooner or later, you may need some water damage restoration. You may not be aware but these things are destroying your property little by little and if we continue neglecting them, they might give us a huge headache in the future. Immediate response to things like this will save you money in the future and hopefully, water damage restoration will no longer be needed.

Water damage restoration may be necessary for a number of different incidents in your home. Natural disasters such as heavy rains and storms may bring us the problem of a flooded basement resulting to a need for water damage restoration. Sometimes, flooding may solely be caused by the location of the house. If a nearby body of water is near your property, overflowing of such may cause the influx of water into your homes.

Another reason could be the presence of unfixed or naturally old pipes. A break on these could cause mild leaking in the beginning but may also completely rupture if not given appropriate attention. Rain drains lining our roofs and outer walls could also bring us a problem. If these are also cracked or blocked with debris, overflow of water when the rainy season comes is likely. It is important to regularly check these areas to prevent crisis or further damage to the structure of the house. With the presence of these problems, it could be the right time to call for a professional water damage restoration company.

The process of water removal could be a very long process. Since this will also cost the homeowner a large amount of money, it is imperative that he or she receives the right water damage restoration service. There are a number of ways to ensure that this happens. An extensive overview of the area to be treated should be done. This helps identify which areas are to be repaired and things to be replaced.

It could be very soothing to the owner if he or she is able to participate in this process. This way, the water damage restoration company can pay attention to the exact concerns of the owner. If you do plan to take part in this step, do ask for a protective gear while doing the walk through to prevent other accidents. The next thing to ask is what the water damage restoration professionals plan to do. This way, we have a general idea of the things to be done and have an understanding as to the costs of the entire repair.

Do not be hesitant to ask how these water damage restoration companies plan to do their job. You are the client and you should get exactly what you placed your money on. Water damage restoration companies may swear of their integrity, but it would be nice to take more than their word for it.

Before we get into the details of water damage, let’s take a look on the types of water that create hazards. In a gross classification, we can get three types – clean, grey and black. First category needs not any further description. Grey water contains chemical and biological contaminants. Their sources are sump pump failures, hydrostatic failures, toilet bowls overflows and any kind of discharge from washing machines or dishwashers. Black water contains chiefly raw sewage, harmful bacteria etc and their sources are sewage pipes, river or sea flooding and toilet backflows. If grey water remains stagnant for a long time, more than 48-72 hours, it is then considered as black water. Water damage can be defined as any kind of destruction of materials or systems caused by water intrusion. It can come in the form of seepage, dripping, natural or artificial inundation etc.

The degree of water damage varies greatly depending upon the source, volume, duration and type of material or system affected. It ranges from mere spots to collapse of concrete structures. But in every situation, the key factor is time. Water continues its damaging businesses as long as it is in contact with the material. So after any kind of flooding situation or as soon as you find any leakage, seepage or dripping, do take immediate measures to minimize the degree and extent of water damage.

Mold growth is the most common problem that we face at home, even if there is no hazardous situation. Any wet material has a tendency of catching fungal development if it is in lack of proper aeration. And fungi can create health hazards as well. One of the most significant aspects of water damage is destruction of important documents. If there is large scale inundation, the restoration process becomes highly difficult. Until the whole of the fluid is pumped out fully, no recovery measures can be started.

Insurance claim becomes the immediate headache after any such calamity strikes. But before the companies pay you back, you have to convince them that you have taken every kind of possible measures before and after the disaster. Here’s the point where people often get stumped by insurance companies and their clauses. Regular check up of your pipelines and sanitation system is a must-do. And so is a prompt disaster recovery service. It’s not wise to take up restoration of any water damage on your own. It might cost you more as there’s 90% chance that you would fail to recover things and your loss toll would rise. You should call up a disaster recovery service agency as fast as you can.

After any sort of disastrous or hazardous situation discussed above, apart from taking care of your papers, furniture, valuable assets etc, do take immediate medical check-up of your own and others. Polluted water can cause fatal dysenteric and dermatological diseases. Also when you are calling a company for water damage recovery, get sure about their quality of work. It’s no use of spending money without getting proper service.

There are times when we forget to close the windows when it rains. Rain would come in and reach some of our furniture. Because furniture is made of organic material such as wood, it attracts the presence of mold. Mold would eat away anything organic, so this could spoil your furniture. This is why you need to take quick action and do something for the mold removal. Here are some tips for easy mold removal from furniture.

Check your furniture regularly. If your chairs or tables emit a musty smell, it means that there is mold growing on it and you would need to do something immediately. Get mild detergent and warm water to clean the patch of mold on the furniture. Wipe the moldy area with mild detergent and then wipe off the soap with clean water. After which, wipe it dry with a soft cloth. Make sure that the furniture is very dry lest mold will grow again. Once the mold removal has taken place, place a layer of wax. This will serve as a protective layer over the furniture. After the process of mold removal, bring the piece of furniture out in the sun to dry. The sun will kill all the spores left on the furniture. This will make sure that there will be lesser chances of mold growing again. Make sure that all parts of the furniture are sun dried.

If you find your mattresses growing mold, remove loose mold by brushing them off. You may use a vacuum cleaner to suck out more mold. Leave it under the sun to disinfect the mattress.

For your leather covered furniture, also be wary for molds. For mold removal, use a cloth with alcohol. Mix the alcohol with water. If alcohol does not do the trick, buy soap or detergent that has fungicide and dip the cloth in that mixture and use it to clean the leather covered furniture. Then wipe the soap suds away with a damp cloth. Lastly, use a clean dry cloth to wipe it dry.

For your wooden pieces of furniture, go to a store that would sell some mild alkali solution. Washing soda or a mixture containing trisodium phosphate would do the trick. Eight to ten tablespoons to a gallon of water would do wonders for the mold removal. After taking out the mold, rinse the wood very well with clean water. Leave it under the sun to dry thoroughly. After that, apply paint that is mildew resistant. This will allow the surface of the wood to withstand any possible growth of mold in the future.

But prevention is always better than the cure. In order to avoid having growth of mold and having to go through the entire process of mold removal, always allow your furniture to be in well ventilated areas. Make sure that they are also kept dry at all times. In case they get wet, make sure to dry them right away. Put them under the sun from time to time as the sun is a good disinfectant when it comes to mold.

As a homeowner, there are very few things that are more distressing than the discovery of gray water, or sewage material within your property. Fortunately, there are some measures that you can take to lessen the damage. If it does happen, all hope is not lost.

However, the repair of the damage caused by sewer backup will always pale in comparison to its prevention. Instead of focusing on how to clean up after such an emergency, a truly savvy homeowner will launch a preemptive strike. This is where the concept of a sewer backup valve comes in. It is an installation in the home which can prevent the occurrence of sewer backup in the home.

Before improvements were made, sewer backup valves were not considered as a convenient form of controlling sewer backup. Older models were installed at the basement and relied on the pull of gravity to shut the valve off. The problem with this is that debris can sometimes get caught in the shutters. Thus, it would be impossible for the valve to seal itself properly. Because of this frequent malfunction, valves were discouraged and even prohibited from being used.

The good news is that such a situation is now just a thing of the past. Because of improved technology, sewer backup valves are now more reliable. The new designs are different in that two valves are now placed in the basement. The materials used to construct the valves are also better in that they are sturdier and more resistant to water. Another added feature is the introduction of the counterweights. This will help keep the valve open unless necessary. The result is that debris will no longer be caught and cause a blockage.

The result of these improvements is a more efficient way of preventing the problem of sewer backup even before it happens. Another advantage to using this system is that it is less invasive than the installation of an overhead sewer. The valve is usually placed in a manhole within the property. This means that there is no need to conduct any kind of construction in the basement. A lot of homeowners will appreciate this kind of convenience.

However, it should be noted that the installation of the valve can be quite expensive. If this is something that you are interested in, be prepared to spend $4,000 to $6,000. Although it may seem a lot, this might be an investment that you may want to consider if you want to protect the value of your property.

If you do decide to get one, make sure that you hire a reputable, licensed plumber to set up the system. Proper installation is the only way for the valve to function properly. Finally, it is good to know that the valve would require regular maintenance to check for any debris that may have gotten stuck. Ensuring that it is free of any blockages will ensure that the valve will run properly for a long time.

Molds infestation can occur in any home or business establishment. Every home utilizes water, and everyday use creates a big possibility for water damage. If left unchecked, water damage could lead to mold infestations. This is a serious problem and is considered by health officials as hazards and detrimental to one’s health. If proper mold removal activities are not done to address its proliferation, mold infestations could lead to even greater damage to homes and properties. There are documented cases where mold infestations are so severe that the owners had no choice but to abandon their houses. This is a major financial setback, as the owners will have next-to-impossible chances of selling these mold-infested homes.

The most important thing for any mold removal activity is safety. Individuals, who are tasked to perform this job, should have appropriate clothing and paraphernalia. Direct contact of molds to skin and respiration should be avoided using gloves, goggles, masks or respirators. Another important aspect in any mold removal program is time. As explained earlier, delaying these cleanup activities could lead to more problems and complications.

To fight molds and have a good mold removal program, one must understand how these fungi proliferate. Molds are attracted to moisture, particularly on damp areas or surfaces, which have exposure to water damage. This is more evident after an occurrence of flooding or rain damage. However, these natural causes are not the only source for moisture. There may be leaks in facilities like sinks, pipes and even fixtures of water-operated appliances. To stop molds from growing, it is important to stop moisture at its source. Repairs may have to be done to the utility or appliance as part of the mold removal program.

Molds also thrive on organic surfaces and materials, which they consume as sources of food. Examples of organic materials are wood, paper, cloth, cardboard and fiber. An integral part of a mold removal program is to check infestations on items made from these organic materials. More obvious occurrences are on items, which have encountered water damage during the flood or water incident. However, items that are also directly exposed to moisture from the air are susceptible for mold occurrence. Suspected materials should be sorted through and check for any signs of infestations. Such signs include discolorations with various hues, and musky or pungent odors. Items exhibiting such signs of infestations should be thoroughly checked, and if needed, should be discarded.

Molds propagate through spores released through the air and lands on moisture-rich surfaces. Molds that have dried out are prone to this, so it is a basic step to perform mold removal using a wet method to prevent spore release. Using powerful detergents mixed with bleach are effective methods of cleaning away molds. Brushing and scrubbing affected surfaces using this solution can remove existing infestations with ease. However, it should be reiterated that safety precautions are completely followed when handling mold and molded surfaces to prevent infection.

Wooden surfaces affected with molds can be cleaned with these solutions. In order to ensure that the surface is complete free from molds, light sanding can be performed to remove sub-surface penetration of the mold infestation. The wooden surface can then be retouched by applying a layer of finishing or linseed oil, or applying a layer of lacquer or varnish.

Mold infested carpets are difficult to clean, and for carpets using organic materials, it is advised to discard these items without attempting mold removal. There is a danger that sub-layers are infected with mold and could not be cleaned with ordinary methods. Special procedures that restoration companies utilize to remove these molds at sub-surface levels are expensive. It might be more cost effective to just discard of the affected carpet and purchase a new one.

There are several more ways of performing mold removal on a variety of surfaces and items. Some items are simple enough and could be performed even by moms and homemakers. It is advisable to be aware of such methods so homeowners would be readily prepared to take action and address mold infestations when they occur.

After a devastating flood, one of the things you must watch out for is the growth of molds in your home. Even after the water removal service and the water damage restoration, mold can still grow in your home after a few weeks. This is because you may have been some moisture hidden when you were trying to clean your home after a flood. Mold spores can easily land on these moist areas and cause the growth of mold. If mold growth remains unnoticed and there is high humidity in your home or there is another water source that “feeds” the mold then you may end up having a terrible mold problem. Enter the solution — mold remediation.

When you discover a mold problem in your home try to remedy it right away. Using mold remediation, the smaller the patch of mold, the easier it is to clean. If the mold grew on a piece of furniture and the problem is severe, you may have to get rid of the furniture. If the problem is so bad covering a wide area of space (e.g. the whole insulation of one of your walls is being eaten away by mold) then call a professional Mold Remediation company right away. Large areas of mold are better dealt with by professionals.

To begin the process of mold remediation in your home, make sure that the contaminated area is contained. If there are several areas of your home are affected by the mold problem then clean each area one at a time making sure that the door to that area is closed. You do not want to spread the mold spores all over your home creating an even bigger mold problem than before.

Mold remediation requires you to gear yourself up with a face mask and rubber globes. Then use a little water spray bottle and spray a bit of water on the mold. This is to keep the mold moist so that mold spores won’t end up flying in the air all over the other areas of your home. Use a sponge or a kitchen scrub (depending on the surface you are cleaning) and scrub off the mold. You should also use a cleaner that can kill molds. After cleaning the area completely, use a moist washcloth or sponge to wash off the cleaner. You can then use a fan to blow air on the surface you just performed mold remediation and then inspect the damage. A painting job may be in order for walls. Generally, the more porous a surface is the more damage will result from a mold infestation. Surfaces like glass, walls with glossy paint, etc. are easier to clean and usually do not get too much damage. If your wall insulation or carpet padding were the ones damaged by the mold, then you may have to get rid of them entirely.

After getting all the surfaces clean and disinfected, make sure that there is no more moisture in your home which may lead to the growth of new mold. Check for leaking pipes and drainage, check for the humidity in your home, and find a solution for these water problems.

Flooded basements require a trickier water removal strategy than any place in the house. Three reasons make it so.

For one, the low location makes it a catch basin of all water accumulated from the flood. Water also follows the rule of gravity and it expectedly would flow to low places making water removal a challenge. It is not unusual for water we missed cleaning up on higher storey rooms to make it to the basement.

Secondly, basements are usually not structured well in terms of handling flooding well. Water removal has to be made through specialized equipments – or lots of manual labor – as most basements do not have drainage systems due to its location. It also tends to be poorly ventilated, if ventilated at all. As a result, moisture in the air gets locked in inside causing increased propensity for molds and fungus that thrive on humid environments.

Lastly, basements are sensitive to the water pressure of flooding outside. If the walls and foundations of basements are weak, it is not unusual for basements to cave in. Because of this, extra care must be given by the flood clean-up crew while conducting water removal in basements.

The following are some concrete tips to remember when conducting water removal from your basement.

First, it is advisable for homeowners to keep in mind water pressure from the outside when cleaning basements. When flood water is still high on the outside, it is best not to initiate water removal yet. The strength of the pressure from the outside can push against the walls and destroy it. At least if water pressure from inside the basement is enough to balance that outside, then you have less likelihood of a wall collapse.

Second, check if there is the water in your basement regularly for a month even after your first water removal. As previously stated, gravity will tend to force all water downwards and they can go to your basement depending on the structure of your home. Thus, it is not unusual to have your basement spic and dry one day and then wet again the next. Constant follow-up is needed to gauge if more water has made their way to the basement and if a second, even third, clean up is called for.

Third, basements tend to be draft and poorly ventilated. When flooding occurs you might want to consider setting up a make-shift ventilation system that will allow air in and out of the room. You might need electricity to power this vent as the air won’t circulate on its own but the effort would be well worth it. The poor ventilation is likely to prevent air from evaporating thorough and thus they will remain in the vicinity. That would make your basement prone to more structure water damage, molding and mildew. If you have a dehumidifier, then it may be best to use it to clean the air.

While water removal from basements is tricky, it is not impossible. Just keep an observant eye. And when in doubt, you can always call your local flood damage recovery service provider for a consultation.
